Really, these books were wildly inappropriate for children. They were, however, excellent.

The fact that we think that these boks are in some way inappropriate for children says a lot of very bad things about our society. Children NEED books in which characters go through horrible pain and learn harsh lessons, in which morals are questioned and compromisedo, in which important things are discussed… because some kids have to go through this shit in real life, and those who don’t have to as children will probably have to as adults.

This is how learning happens.

Fiction gives kids a safe place to practice and explore moral dilemmas like the slow psychological breaking of child soldiers fighting a secret war, learning how ‘good’ people can not just commit but rationalize the slaughter of civilians and prisoners in wartime.

Children are the people who NEED to learn this stuff. what could be MORE appropriate for children?

I’m so happy right now.

I hope he keeps this up. This man, as a bishop, was known to be good friends with people from several other religions and even atheists, so I’m glad to see he hasn’t felt the need to curtail some of his unorthodox views in order to be Pope.

I know that people think that religion promotes morality, which I guess it does, but I personally (speaking as a religious person) have never understood why Athiests or just people with no specific religion should automatically be seen as “bad.” There are good people who do not believe in God. There are bad people who do believe in God. The opposite is true both ways. Why should their religion define their moral character on sight?

In short I’m slow clapping for the Pope right now.

I’m right there with you. Absence of faith has nothing to do with absence of goodness. Since I believe God is in everyone then everyone must have the capacity to be good, regardless of what they think.

As a Catholic I have been trying to tell people this for years. I got in trouble at school for arguing with teachers about it.

I am so happy that Pope Francis has already been doing so much good.

AND SUDDENLY I CAN SCROLL THROUGH REPLYS VIA ARROW KEYS like I don’t know if it was just be but before it would only put my cursor at the beginning and end of the whole text and I could move back and forth only within a line so if I had 3 lines and misspelled something in the middle I’d have to use ctrl+f to get my cursor there to fix it and omg this is wonderful!!!

OK I am overhauling this DA:J character and was thinking about Muslimah-friendly design or at least costume design that would remain “authentic” even with the few additions or changes it would need to be appropriate for a Muslimah cosplayer and I HAVE IGNORANT WHITE QUESTIONS

If any follow me, I would appreciate your answers: Would you be comfortable adding long sleeved shirt or underarmor under these costume pieces to cover exposed skin? Would such an addition be adequate? How would the fact that the character canonically has a headscarfy accessory make you feel about adapting the design to your own needs, or does it just look stupid/tryhard and you’ll add whatever you like to a costume so screw what is or isn’t authentic? Other thoughts or concerns? Any characters regarded as Muslimah-friendly that I should look at?

From what I understand, there reason Muslims or women of certain faiths cover their body is to show respect to their god/themselves. By having random parts of her body showing, you’re pretty much going against that. The few women I’ve known who are into these types of faiths would wear long sleeves and some sort of leggings with almost every outfit so only their face and hands would be showing.

I think to really be more accurate or allow women to cosplay this desing you’d have to cover the whole body. Hijabs are extremely beautiful and frame the face very nicely, and you have a lot to work with style wise - you could even put armour/headgear over them. You could then have her wear black tights instead of disco knee leggings, simple cloth tunic and focus on what you layer on top of that. Byzantine era armour would look so badass over this all personally.

Pretty sure when my friend edits movies for Middle Eastern Airlines they ask him to crop or edit any sequence where a woman is showing bare arms and shoulders, so by those standards this would be an inappropriate costume. However I can’t speak for how individuals choose to dress considering so much of it deals with personal reflection and interpretation (if you’re not in an area that mandates certain dress codes by law).

But yeah, I’m not a Muslim myself so I have no authority to say what people do or don’t wear. I’m just fairly sure that this costume would be censored if it was in a movie playing on one of the airlines my friend does work for, if that counts for anything.

I assume someone who follows me has more authority to talk about this, though.

While I am not Muslim myself, my cousin is, and she typically wears a tigher, long-sleeved shirt under a longish, flowier shirt and flowing pants. I have never seen her in a hijab, however, although I’ve never asked her about that. She usually has a scarf, though. I can’t say how much is personal preference and how much is about modest/faith, but I figured I’d throw in another voice for not showing skin besides hands and faces/heads.

Perhaps more helpfully, when I was in Morocco, all the women where covered except their hands and faces, and we were advised against wearing shorts lest we look disrespectful. Even the guys, I think, although I can’t remember.

i’m so sure that the person who posted this thought about the notes much more than they thought about the guys with eating disorders.

Oh, really? Because I am the poster/creator of this photo, and I myself am a male sufferer of an eating disorder. Perhaps I wanted to bring awareness to eating disorders in males so that way they could feel less alone. In a way, I’m happy that this got a good amount of notes because it just means that people care and awareness is being spread, but I care much more about those suffering than I do about the notes.
